An Open Letter To Facebook In Regards To Being Censored In Your Purge

An Open Letter To Facebook In Regards To Being Censored In Your Purge.

By Joe Bowman

Dear Facebook,

Justice, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Some see an innocent victim. Others will see evil incarnate getting exactly what’s deserved. Two years ago Google banned me from placing ads on my website therefore ensuring that I couldn’t make much, if any, money writing articles. I’ve always had a knack for driving traffic and being 10 steps ahead of Facebook when it comes to algorithm suppression of posts and different techniques that just aren’t teachable. This is why some succeed at this and some fail sans any intervention. On October 11, 2018 Facebook unpublished my page Political Junkie News Media as part of a methodically planned purge of designated individuals that run political pages that reach millions of people. They said i could appeal the decision just by clicking a button. Today, exactly 3 weeks, later without notification or justification, Facebook pulled the plug and killed my page. 5 years, 300,000 followers. You can kill my page, that’s fine, but you will never kill my ideas! I have been the victim of constant attacks on my free speech and ability to make money from a platform that I spend thousands of dollars in time and advertising building up my brand. I have been given arbitrary bans for discrepancies that do not go against Facebook’s”Community Standards”. I was asked to join a Class Action lawsuit previously because Google disabled my Adsense account in 2015 without recourse or reason and still owes me over $900 in ad revenue that they never paid me.
My page Political Junkie News Media had a following of over a quarter of a Million people and it was unpublished by Facebook on October along with 558 other pages apparently.  Here is my summation:
My name is Joe Bowman. I am the administrator and creator of the Facebook Page, Political Junkie News Media. Your team recently unpublished my page without warning and seemingly without good reason. I later learned my page was part of an effort to collectively purge pages that allegedly violated Facebook terms of service.
When my page was unpublished, Facebook  made claims as to why it was removed. These claims are false. They said, “Your page was unpublished for misleading behavior, such as being administered by a fake account, misleading users, or violating Facebook spam policies.”
I am the administrator of the page. My account is not fake or false. My name is correct. My name has been in the page’s URL since it was created in 2011. I have never misled anyone with this page. I speak the truth and pontificate on controversial material, but I do not lead anyone astray or utter falsehoods. In my opinion, the notion that a group or page is “misleading others” is a vague way to oust pages you disagree with or that upsets your sensibilities.
I never violated Facebook spam policies. I post content regularly, but I have never spammed or arbitrarily made posts just to fill up the news feed or spam in order to generate a profit. In fact I’ve never made a penny from my page after I was demonitized from Google Adsense without explanation in 2015.
I  post purposeful, impassioned messages with the mission of helping wake people up to the depredations of that plagues our current society. I created content to teach people about the power of empathy and human connection; about the power of shared love. I played by the rules. Even if I did commit an infraction or violation, I was never warned or given any indication of wrongdoing.
Rather than being punished for specific bad behavior, I believe I was targeted as part of an Orwellian censorship agenda. I imagine you used a similar canned message of alleged policy infractions to the majority of pages you ousted, regardless if they did anything in violation of your terms of service agreement.
In my mind, it is no coincidence that many of the pages you unpublished position themselves from a libertarian, anarchist, or activist standpoint.
If these pages were truly violating Facebook’s policies, why did you they wait to remove them all at once instead of letting them continue to violate policy on an individual basis? Why did many of the pages share similar content and philosophical underpinnings? Why were many pages never warned for this alleged bad behavior?
This is setting a dangerous precedent. They are saying that speech should be limited to what they believe is acceptable, and that the flow of information should be regulated by gatekeepers.

Jason Bassler one of the founders of The Free Thought Project also had his pages Police The Police and End The Drug War unpublished on October 11th, 2018. These giant tech companies censoring independent media is not a new concept. In this video, Luke Rudkowski talks to Jason Bassler of The Free Thought Project and Nick Bernabe of The Anti Media about the uphill battle they were facing in independent media back in 2015.

In a prepared statement Facebook stated that it had  purged more than 800 U.S publishers and accounts for flooding users with politically oriented content that violated the company’s “Community Standards”.

“Today, we’re removing 559 Pages and 251 accounts that have consistently broken our rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior,” the company said in a blog post. “People will only share on Facebook if they feel safe and trust the connections they make here.”

I understand that Facebook has the right to determine who can participate, but they and other social media conglomerates like Google are not immune from political influence, graft, and the urge to engage in disinformation campaigns. Recently, Facebook has been partnering with the Digital Forensics Lab, an arm of the Atlantic Council think tank — a neoconservative group funded by Gulf monarchies and defense giants like Raytheon who’s board of Directors includes former U.S Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Michael Chertoff former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Similarly, it has been partnering with the neoconservative Weekly Standard magazine and Snopes to fact check so-called “fake news”. The American ruling class is waging both economic and real war from Venezuela to Syria to the Ukraine and it will not tolerate dissent — the internet must be tamed and de-fanged — people either won’t find out about US war-making or if they find out and protest about it, well, that’s what the head-cracking cops are for and deleting these pages will assist in smothering news about police brutality and opposition to war. Facebook has been nothing more than a data mining advertising platform since shortly after it’s launch, and the claim that it’s just a technology firm that wants to “Bring The World together” is absurd and disingenuous.  While it is certainly true that a private company can and should be able to choose who they associate with, the idea that Facebook is private is not accurate. For this reason, the recent purge of hundreds of alternative media sites, including the Free Thought Project, was not only questionable, but unconstitutional.

In May, after Americans were successfully whipped into a frenzy of Russian hacking and meddling, along with the fake news hysteria, the Americans begging for censorship craze came to a head when Facebook partnered with the Atlantic Council.

Facebook announced that it partnered with the arm of the council, known as the Digital Forensic Research Lab that was brought on to help the social media behemoth with “real-time insights and updates on emerging threats and disinformation campaigns from around the world.”

The Atlantic Council is the group that NATO uses to whitewash wars and foster hatred toward Russia, which in turn allows them to continue to justify themselves. It’s funded by arms manufacturers like Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing. It is also funded by billionaire oligarchs like the Ukraine’s Victor Pinchuk and Saudi billionaire Bahaa Hariri.

The list goes on. The highly unethical HSBC group — who has been caught numerous times laundering money for cartels and terrorists — is listed as one of their top donors. They are also funded by the pharmaceutical industry, Google, the United States, the US Army, and the Airforce. Facebook, or as i like to refer to them Fascistbook, operates from the territory known as the United States. There certain Rights have been Enumerated in their Constitution. Any business operating within said territory which denies anyone their Rights is in a precarious position and should be dealt with in accordance with the guidelines laid out at the Nuremberg Trials for dealing with Fascism. This Censorship of those who are directing attention at the State and its failures is telling and should be dealt with immediately as it is the start of a slippery slope of further constitutional violations of it’s users. The “think tank” Facebook partnered with to make decisions on who they censor is directly funded by multiple state actors — including the United States — which voids any and all claims that Facebook is a wholly “private actor.”

Any time you try to talk about how internet censorship threatens our ability to get the jackboot of oligarchy off our necks you’ll always get some guy in your face who’s read one Ayn Rand book and thinks he knows everything, saying things like “Facebook is a private company! It can do whatever it wants!” Is it now? Has not Facebook been inviting US government-funded groups to help regulate its operations, vowing on the Senate floor to do more to facilitate the interests of the US government, deleting accounts at the direction of the US and Israeli governments, and handing the guidance of its censorship behavior over to the Atlantic Council, which receives funding from the US government, the EU, NATO and Gulf states? How “private” is that? Facebook is a deeply government-entrenched corporation, and Facebook censorship is just what government censorship looks like in a corporatist system of government.

Facebook doesn’t get to be the “private company” that can pick and choose who’s speech to suppress. In a corporatist system, wherein there is no clear line between corporate power and government power, corporate censorship is government censorship. You can’t have a system wherein corporate lobbying and campaign finance amount to legalized bribery of elected officials, wherein massive Silicon Valley corporations form extensive ties with secretive government agencies in order to eclipse their competition, and then claim this is a matter of private corporations enforcing their own rules on their own private property. This is just what totalitarian government censorship looks like in a corporatist oligarchy.

RT recently interviewed Bassler, who stated “This is nothing more than political censorship and trying to eradicate certain political ideologies”.

Partnering up with  the Atlantic Council not only shows how closely tied the company is to former and current government individuals and entities but it is without a doubt an attempt to ensure the grip of dominant imperialist powers, militaries, multinationals & banks who feel threatened by anti-establishment narratives. Mainstream media can be found in almost every social and private setting within the developed world. However, the number of large, mainstream media outlets have been continually declining and a record number of people have lost trust in the major news networks. Alternative/Independent media, such as social media outlets or news blogs, have grown exponentially over the last 10-15 years. Much of this rise is due to the expansion of the Internet which has allowed for a much wider range of opinions and facts to be seen and heard. This range obviously includes positions that have been traditionally outside of mainstream media. Alternative media is created in opposition to mainstream media. Alternative media, in fact, can be defined by it’s level of subversion from the mainstream. This subversion is rooted in a strong desire for change from the status quo perpetuated by mainstream media. When one considers communication as “the creative making of a social order”, then the importance of alternative media is clear. Whether activist or autonomous, an egalitarian and engaged network of communication will define the future of alternative media. It’s up to the public, the person to decide what they wish to watch and are mature enough to make up their own opinions on the content. The so called free speech of Facebook and tech companies are  is no more, as not only has the Supreme court deemed social media “The new public square”, these companies have sold out the very people who made them to political pressure. We don’t need a nanny state, or website telling us what we can and can’t watch or believe. This in reality is a gagging order on anything that certain people or organisations would rather not be available to the greater public. It’s scandalous and if it carries on another company hopefully will jump in their place and do to them what they did to  As an activist, October 11, 2018 will go down as a date that will live in infamy as I watched friends of mine who have been consummate professionals of Independent media have their platforms yanked from them by the “Thought Police” in order to provide pre-approved news just like they do in North Korea and other authoritarian dictatorships! Thank you to Matt Orfalea for interviewing me about my particular situation. I was glad that I was able to speak out for those who have had their platforms that they have spent so much time, energy, and resources by multi-Billion dollar corporations that have made a coordinated effort to go for their jugular.

Video above is part of the story of how Facebook killed the original Political Junkie News Media page.
For now, Facebook and Twitter have been free to censor with impunity. At first I was upset that Facebook would take down my page out of all of the ridiculousness that they allow. Now I consider it an honor that the establishment saw me as that much of a threat. My simple message for you is that sometimes, doing the right thing means allowing people to disseminate ideas that cause you anxiety or frustrate your sense of morality. It is this principle of open, uncensored speech that forms the bulwark of a prosperous, beautiful, and free society. The ability to engage in the market of ideas is what makes us human. It provides us with the impetus to improve the world; and ultimately, it makes us better. This is especially true in this age of competing information channels.
I hope that you will be able to assist me rather than attempt to destroy my brand. My intellectual property and future prosperity depend on it.
“Arguing that you don’t care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say”
– Edward Snowden

  1. I’m so sorry this has happened to you. I’m just a housewife that likes to share Christianity & political Republican articles……FB decided to block me from sharing. I’ve gone to Linkedin but am unable to see much movement. There needs to be another place we can go to share things that are Important to us. Thank you for your post.
